Texas winters are typically mild, but occasional hard freezes can damage irrigation systems if not properly prepared. Freezing temperatures can burst pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, and expensive backflow preventers (double check valves). Follow these simple, effective steps to protect your system and avoid costly repairs in the spring.

1) Shut Off the Water Supply to the Irrigation System

Locate the dedicated irrigation ball valve (usually in the ground box near the main water line or backflow preventer). Turn the valve clockwise (right) until it stops to fully close it.

Important: This valve is before (upstream of) the irrigation double check valve/backflow preventer. Shutting it off here prevents water from entering the system. (You can turn the double check handles off also but after step 2)

2) Relieve Pressure and Drain Residual Water from the Lines

Go to your irrigation controller/timer (typically in the garage).

Manually start a spray zone in the front yard (one that is easy to see and observe).

Let the zone run for 20–30 seconds. Watch the sprinkler heads — water should initially spray, then stop as residual pressure drains. If no water comes out after the initial burst (or it trickles to a stop), the lines are depressurized and mostly drained.

(You can run each irrigation zone for 30 seconds or less to depressurize all lateral and main line)

3) Turn Off the Controller

After running the zone(s), return the controller to the OFF position to prevent any automatic watering during winter.

4) Protect Exposed Components (Recommended for Extra Protection)

Insulate the in-ground double check valve (backflow preventer) assembly:

You can purchase wall/fiberglass insulation from a hardware store.

Wrap it snugly around the valve body, test cocks, and exposed piping. Secure with duct tape if needed.

Alternatively, wrap a thick towel, old sweatshirt, or blanket around it for temporary protection, then cover with a plastic bag to keep it dry. Do not cover test cocks permanently — they may need occasional access.

5) Secure All Irrigation Valve Boxes

Ensure all in-ground valve box lids are properly seated and closed.

Remove any debris, leaves, or standing water from inside the boxes to prevent ice formation or water intrusion.
