Irrigation and landscape work in Dallas

People talk about Dallas as black gumbo, and east of the White Rock Escarpment that is exactly what it is — deep expansive clay that cracks open in August and swells shut after the first real rain. But Austin Chalk covers something between a third and a half of Dallas County’s surface, and on that side you are working in shallow soil over limestone instead. Same city, completely different trenching, root depth and watering behaviour.

The watering rules changed in 2026 and a lot of people have not caught up. Twice a week is the maximum, assigned by house number: even-numbered addresses on Sundays and Thursdays, odd-numbered on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Nobody waters Monday, Tuesday or Friday. And the ban on sprinklers between 10am and 6pm, which used to run April through October, now applies all year. A controller set up before last spring is very likely watering outside the window in winter.

Dallas Water Utilities offers free irrigation evaluations to its customers, carried out by licensed specialists — genuinely useful if you want an independent view of programming, leaks and coverage before spending anything. Backflow testers here must be registered with the city and file through its online system, and for irrigation specifically the city requires testing when a device is newly installed, repaired or replaced rather than annually.

Dallas is not one soil. The chalk escarpment runs through the middle of the county, and which side of it you are on changes the job.

Controllers still on the old seasonal rule

The 10am to 6pm ban is now year-round in Dallas rather than April to October. Winter programmes written under the old rule are in breach every time they run.

Shallow chalk on the west side of the county

West and central Dallas frequently sit on thin soil over Austin Chalk. Trench depth, root zone and how long a zone should run are all different there from the black clay east of the escarpment.

Heads and laterals moved by expansive clay

East of the escarpment it is the familiar story — tilted and buried heads, sheared laterals, and drainage that worked for years and then did not.

Older inner-city systems with no backflow protection

On the oldest properties we still find systems that predate any requirement. That is a health issue before it is a compliance one.

Water, soil and rules in Dallas

Dallas Water Utilities runs its own supply and sells wholesale to much of the region. Watering is limited to twice weekly year-round by address: even-numbered addresses on Sundays and Thursdays, odd-numbered on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and no watering on Mondays, Tuesdays or Fridays. Following a 2026 revision to the ordinance, sprinklers and automatic irrigation are prohibited between 10am and 6pm on any day of the year — previously this applied only from April to October. Hand watering, soaker hoses and drip are exempt from the day and time limits. Working rain and freeze sensors are required. Free irrigation evaluations are available to DWU customers.

Under Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules, selling, designing, installing, altering, repairing or servicing an irrigation system requires a TCEQ licence. Ask any contractor for their license number before work begins — in Dallas as anywhere else in Texas.
